Working Holiday Visa (WHV)
Each year thousands of young people visit Australia and inevitably say “I don’t want to leave”. On some occasions, the backpacker has already blown their chances of staying, due to the lack of planning.
Picking fruit and tying tomatoes sounds fun and that’s what some people do when they come to Oz; however many find short term jobs within their occupation. It’s possible to find employment within your field, especially if you are a tradesperson.
If you decide that Australia is for you but you haven’t worked within your skill or trade, you may face the dilemma of not being eligible for a permanent visa. One component for a skilled visa is to have ‘recent work experience’, you must evidence 12 of the previous 24 months working within your nominated occupation.
If you decide to stay for the 2nd year of your WHV ensure that you have achieved the 3 months ‘rural’ work early in your stay. You must have achieved the 88 days rural work to be eligible to apply for a 2nd visa. They key is to plan early to maximise your time and skills while in Australia.
